CAPA Annual Meeting Held in Washington, DC

The Chinese American Pathologists Association (CAPA) held its annual general meeting in conjunction with the USCAP meeting on March 20, 2010, in Washington DC.
Dr. Shuan Li, the president of the society that represents Chinese American Pathologists practicing at both academic and private institutions in US and Canada, opened the meeting to over 100 CAPA
members.
Dr. Li announced the "Resident research award" to four residents and fellows of Chinese ethnicity for their research work of excellent quality. Each winner was given a certificate and a cash award. These residents are: Dr. Xiao Hong of Massachusetts General Hospital (first place), Dr. Rui Zheng of Johns Hopkins Hospital (second place), Dr Huankai Hu of Case Western Reserve University (third place), Dr. Jingmei Lin of Johns Hopkins Hospital (third place) and Dr. Wei Jiang of Cleveland Clinic (third place).
Dr. Li then thanked three retiring executive committee members, Dr. Jiaoti Huang, Dr. Wenxin Zheng, and Dr. Shu-Yuan Xiao who have finished their 2-year term, for their hard work and service to CAPA during their tenure.
Dr. Li also welcomed three new executive committee members on board. Dr. Steven Shen (President-elect), Dr. Yun Gong, and Dr. Beverly Wang were nominated by the executive committee and approved unanimously by all the members attending the business meeting.
Dr. Li then gave a financial report and stressed that the main source of income for CAPA was membership dues and donations from members of CAPA. All money are used for the member activity. This year's reception and resident research award bore a cost of nearly $8000.
Dr. Wei Xin reported on the membership drive by the membership subcommittee and encouraged all members to participate in CAPA activities by contacting any EC members. He also reiterated the process
of election process for EC members and the President.
Dr. Steven Shen gave a brief report of public relation/website subcommittee and he thanked all previous CAPA members for their outstanding service to CAPA and encouraged all the members to continue to work as a group on national stage and collaborate with Chinese pathology organizations. Dr. Shen introduced and thanked Dr. Lanjing Zhang for his hard work in establishing and running an effective and functional CAPA website. Dr. Zhang did a live video demonstration of the main features and functionalities of the new website. Members are encouraged to browse our website and make suggestion for improvement.
Dr. Ming Zhou was introduced and officially inaugurated as our next President and Dr. Zhou thanked Dr. Shuan Li for his service last year and briefly outlined the main plans for next year.
After the business meeting, Dr. Li lead a panel discussion by pathologists of diverse background, including Dr. Jinsong Liu of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Dr. Jim Zhai of University of
Cincinnati, and Dr. Lanjing Zhang, a resident at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. They discussed various career options for Chinese pathologists. The panelists discussed the pro and cons of practice in academic, government and private practice. Audience eagerly exchanged questions and thoughts with the panelists.
The meeting was followed by an elegant open bar buffet. All meeting attendants, many first-timers, were impressed by the quality of the food, which was arranged by Dr. Ping Tang after many hours on the phone with the vendor. But most importantly, our members had a great time meeting with fellow members. All of them look forward to next year's meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
