2011 President's message
On behalf of this year’s Executive Committee (EC), I welcome you to the CAPA website. This year marks the 10th anniversary since the inception of our Association which provides a home for Chinese American Pathologists in North America and around the world. Our leadership team and I are honored to serve CAPA built by many dedicated people who share the same background and inspiration for success as well the same love for the field of diagnostic and investigative pathology.
We are grateful to last year’s EC members for their dedicated work, particularly Min Zhou, for leading the way as President, in 2010-2011, Wei Xin as our tireless membership director, Jinsong Liu and Shuan Li for their insight and guidance, and Ping Tang for her behind the scene work in running our yearly meeting for the last couple of years. We are very fortunate to have 4 new dedicated members (Longwen Chen, Haodong Xu, Jun Zhang and Zuhua Gao) who are joining the EC committee.
Our association has grown rapidly over the years from fewer than 100 members to more than 300 now. Many of our members have achieved great success and have become experts in their subspecialty field as well as leaders in their practice. I believe that CAPA has served as a platform and important link between many of our members. I can say that from my personal experience. By being a member, by going to the annual CAPA meeting, and by serving as committee member, co-chair and EC member, I feel that CAPA has contributed tremendously to my professional development and personal life.
By working together with all CAPA members and EC and each subcommittee, we hope to accomplish the following three main goals this year.
1. To update and publish our membership directory. I think it is necessary to get to know each other better besides attending the annual meeting.
2. To update our website and publish our newsletter on a more regular basis. We will ask you to contribute to the contents of our newsletter.
3. To explore the unique CAPA Education Program which greatly benefits all members and establishes and strengthens CAPA relationships with Chinese Pathology Organizations.
I sincerely ask all of you to help CAPA achieve these goals. Your support for all these activities will be a great contribution in making CAPA a more valuable association that we can all enjoy. Please let me or any of the EC members know whether you are available and willing to help. I also welcome your comments and suggestions by email or phone call.
Sincerely,
Steven Shen, M.D.,Ph.D.

2010 President's report
Ming Zhou, MD, PhD
Immediate Past President
The 9th Chinese American Pathologists Association (CAPA) annual meeting was held in San Antonio, Texas, in conjunction with 100th USCAP annual meeting on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011. About 150 members attended the meeting and the reception.
Dr. Ming Zhou, the President 2010-2011, first welcomed all the members to the annual meeting. He acknowledged the attendance of Dr. Bruce Smoller, the incoming executive Vice President of USCAP, Dr. Smoller praised CAPA’s contribution to the advancement of diagnostic pathology in China and communication with Chinese Pathology societies and encouraged CAPA to do even more in the coming years.
The meeting was kicked off by three well-known pathologists, Dr. Ping Tang of University of Rochester, Dr. Xiuli Liu of Cleveland Clinic and Dr. Longwen Chen of Cleveland Clinic. All three are leaders in their perspective fields. They discussed critical issues, new entities and concepts and emerging molecular diagnostic tests in breast, GI and GYN pathology.
Dr. Steve Shen of Methodist Hospital in Houston then took over the podium and moderated a lively discussion on how to have one’s scholarly work published in the top pathology journals. A group of well published academic pathologists and editorial members of major pathology journals lead the discussion of various aspects of manuscript preparation, submission, and revision towards publication, and how to avoid major mistakes and pitfalls. Dr. Cheng Liang of Indiana University was the invited speaker and the panel members included Drs. Chen Liu, Jinsong Liu, Shiyong Li, and Ximing Yang.
CAPA’s business meeting started after the scientific session and chaired by Dr. Ming Zhou. He welcomed all the members to the annual meeting. He thanked many members for their hard work to try to accomplish CAPA’s mission: to improve educational opportunities and professional skills of practicing pathologists of Chinese ethnicity, by promoting communication, friendship and cultural exchange, and by advancing the science and practice of pathology and laboratory medicine.
He proudly claimed that CAPA has indeed accomplished a lot in last year. All the subcommittee chairs reported their perspective accomplishments.
Membership and nomination committee did several membership drives and installed online membership due payment that is much easier to use. For the first time in CAPA’s history, our members directly selected the President-elect and 3 new executive committee members.
CAPA and its members have organized, sponsored and participated in many educational activities in China.
CAPA’s website has been significantly improved and has attracted increased traffic. CAPA was recently contacted by a researcher for the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), which is a very popular program on CBS. He wanted to know about the crime and forensic investigation. He found us on our website!
