08/08/23: Volunteer Opportunities in Henan, China

To: Dr. Xiao, President, CAPA
Dear Dr. Xiao:

It’s very nice to talk to you today about volunteer team in China. I have been working in Henan Tumor Hospital, Zhengzhou as a volunteer since last year. I worked there as a volunteer hematopathologist 2 weeks per year. I feel my work was very helpful for them. I had very interesting experience there with clinicians and pathologists. There are many problems in the training of pathologists and severe shortage in qualified pathologists in China due to system problem at current time. I think we can make contributions about it as a pathologists group CAPA in USA. I was inspired by an international volunteer pathologists group working in Ganna, India. They rotate in a large hospital, 2 weeks to one month per pathologist around the year. I am not sure the detail about it. However, I explored the possibility with the director of International Office in Henan Tumor Hospital about it, who was very interesting in the idea.

We cover our expenditure of international and domestic travel and the hospital covers our accommodation during the time of volunteer. I usually give a couple of lectures in the hospital and the city and some small group teachings including slides teaching. We may be able to get a temporary medical license from the local provincial health ministry in order to work in China. There is a strong pathologists group in the city with weekly consultation and academic activity. They are relatively weak in hematopathology area and so my work is valuable for the hospital. I am writing to you and other members of CAPA to explore the idea. I hope “a small stone casted from me will bring out highly valuable jades” from our members in CAPA.

Zhengzhou is an exciting place and is developing very fast. A new international conference center was built recently in a scale the design out of my imagination. It is considered the 2nd largest one in China following the one in Guangzhou. Henan is the cradle of China and Kaifeng served the capital for seven dynasties of China. There are many scenic sports like Long Men Stone Caves, Yin Xu of An Yang and Peony exhibition of Luo Yang, and you name it. You may enjoy variety of foods and traveling after your services. Academic opportunities present if you are interested.

Thanks for your attention. Have a good weekend.
